Per Mertesacker set for Arsenal move in summer, Werder Bremen chief hints
Arsenal target Per Mertesacker looks set to leave his present club Werder Bremen at the end of the season.
The Gunners have struggled at centre-back all season, with key player Thomas Vermaelen not having played since September and French signing Sebastien Squillaci failing to impress.
Manager Arsene Wenger is believed to have targeted German international Mertesacker to solve his defensive problems, and Werder Bremen are ready to cash in.
Mertesacker and goalkeeper Tim Wiese will both have just one year left on their contracts with the Bundesliga team in June, and Werder’s general manager Klaus Allofs indicated that the club cannot afford to lose the pair for nothing.
‘If you are not going to hand out an extension to an outrunning contract then you need to know all the possibilities available to you,’ he said.
