The defeat at Newcastle would have damaged the spirits of a few Wolves fans but we knew before the game that three wins were needed from the last 8 games and that obviously means there is an expectation that there will still be a few defeats to come. But Wolves need to get up off the floor and keep on going and I think everyone thats been following them this season will know thats exactly what they will do.
In fact they even showed that they are not a team for lying down on Saturday. After losing game deciding goals either side of half time they bounced back to dominate the next half hour and if Fletcher had scored rather than hit the post then who knows what would have happened. But now all that is behind us and the next two games are at Molineux against Everton and Fulham and it’s the home form thats kept Wolves in there in contention so far this season.
The big decision for McCarthy this weekend will be whether to go with one up front or two. Certainly they looked better with two on Saturday with Ebanks Blake and Fletcher impressing and looking capable of goals. And I don’t think that will be the case if only one of them plays. The argument against going with 4-4-2 is partly that there will be more security defensively with 5 in midfield and with Everton likely to play 4-5-1 there is always a danger of limited possession when you are outnumbered in midfield. But Wolves would be likely to play the game longer if there were two strikers.
The other argument for 5 in midfield is that as players have returned from injury Wolves suddenly have a glut of players angling for a game in the middle of the park. They have 4 wide players to call on in Jarvis, Hamill, Kightly and Hunt. And even more competing for a central midfield role with O’Hara, Henry, Milijas, Jones, Guedioura and Mancienne. So there is enough there to play 0-10-0.
And after a 4-1 defeat McCarthy will see that as giving him the ‘right’ to make some changes if he feels the team needs freshening up for the final run in. The defence has done well over the winter but have conceded 7 in three games now so will the experience of Craddock be called on? Will Kightly get an emotional return to Molineux action or will Hunt be recalled or even Guedioura? Or will McCarthy write Saturday’s defeat off as a one off and rely largely on the team that got 11 points from the previous 6 games.
Whatever the decision the crunch time of the season has arrived and Wolves simply must win at least one of the next two games. I think they will.
