Wolves musings on a weekend without football

By: DJ | September 4th, 2010

guediouraWeekends without football are usually a time for a holiday but this weekend I haven’t got my act together so I can think over what I should do without my international call up.  Of course Wolves have lots of international players nowadays so they have gone to various points around Europe or in Adlene Guedioura’s case to Africa for an African Cup of Nations tie for Algeria against Tanzania. And he smashed in a fantastic equalising goal from 30 yards just to make it worthwhile, his first goal for Algeria. Take a look  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUxYmKVN3Ig

Also in action was Kevin Doyle who played 90 minutes for Eire with Andy Keogh a late sub but Kevin Foley didn’t get a game. Berra was also a late sub for Scotland. Hennessey played in goal for Wales and Edwards played the first 70 minutes. Van Damme and Milijas didn’t get a game for Belgium and Serbia but youngster Jonny Gorman got his 4th cap as a sub for Northern Ireland and he is still a 17 year old schoolboy. Mancienne played for England U21.

Gorman is rated very highly in Ireland and it will be interesting to see how his and some of the other promising youngsters at the club progress in the next couple of years. Malone, Baath, Winnall are others that are getting noticed but it’s a big jump from development football to Premier League so how does the club get them to the level they can be ready for the step up. Most likely route is via the loan system so they can get competitive football in the lower divisions. It would be great to see some players coming through the ranks and when the best team in the world currently, Barcelona, regularly get players to make the step from academy to the first team then there is no real excuse for anyone else.

Michael Kightly’s omission from the first team squad announced this week has raised a lot of concern about his fitness, coming as it did hot on the heels of Matt Murray having to give up the fight to return to the team. The only way Kightly can remove that concern now is to get some games and Reading have already expressed an interest in taking him on loan. It will probably be another month before he is fit enough to go through with that but he will need a couple of months of playing to get back to the Wolves squad in January or else this season will be written off for him and then the concerns will just grow more. It was one of the most amazing transfers of the summer window when Sigurdsson left Reading to go to Bundesliga team Hoffenheim for £6m and it has to be flattering for Kightly that they are looking for him to come in and fill the gap.

Stephen Hunt is stepping up his training an could be looking for a game later in September, and at a similar time Sam Vokes should be ready to play for Bristol City again on his loan that runs until January . It is one of the most pleasing things about Wolves start to the season that there are a number of very good players that are yet to step into the team. As well as Hunt we have Fletcher and Mouyokolo to come in and injury has also sidelined Zubar. Even Kevin Doyle has been playing while not match sharp after injury so his games for Ireland this week will help him get back to peak form. And Jelle Van Damme is still adjusting to the pace of the English game. So the promising start to the season may well have been achieved with what proves to be quite different to the strongest team.

Its worth remembering how much the team changed during the course of last season. For the first game at home to West Ham it was;

Hennessey, Foley, Mancienne, Craddock, Ward, Halford, Henry, Milijas, Jarvis, Keogh Ebanks Blake

For the last game against Sunderland at home it was;

Hahnemann, Zubar, Craddock, Berra, Elokobi, Guedioura Henry, Jones, Jarvis, Ebanks Blake, Doyle

And lots of changes between those times. So we will see many of the 25 man squad get their chance before the season is out and it is the strength in depth as well as the strongest team that will determine what the finishing position will be.
