A break from the Cup Finals for Wolves

doncaster1Wolves have  17 cup finals left in their Premier League season but tomorrow they start their FA Cup campaign for 2011 with a trip to the Keepmoat Stadium. It is one of the more pleasant new stadiums approached via a walk by a lake in a park and Wolves have won every competitive game they have ever played in Doncaster.

These two teams have largely avoided each other over the years and this will only be the 7th meeting. Wolves won 1-0 homes and away in their Championship winning season of 2008/09. The previous meetings were in 1985/86 when Wolves won 1-0 at the old Belle Vue stadium and Donny won 2-1 at Molineux in 3rd Division games. And you have to go all the way back to 1924 for the only other meetings when again in Division 3 Wolves got the double over the Rovers 2-0 and 1-0.

Doncaster are managed by Wolves fan Sean O’Driscoll whi is creditted with doing a decent job under a small budget. They currently sit in 14th place largely as a result of good home form. They have lost just one league game at the Keepmoat this season and thats a record only matched by league leaders QPR in the Championship. They score plenty of goals and strikers Billy Sharp and James Hayter have both scored more than a goal every other game this season.

I anticipated that Wolves would send out a much changed team from the one that raised the roof at Molineux on Wednesday but evidently that won’t be the case. Ebanks Blake is out for three weeks with a hamstring injury picked up against Chelsea and Foley and Zubar have slight knocks and won’t be risked. But McCarthy has already said that the defence will be made up of Hahnemann, Stearman, Berra and Elokobi with a debut at right back for Matt Doherty. The Wolves number 46 is 18 years old and was snapped up in the summer after impressing in a pre season friendly against Wolves for Bohemians.

The midfield will be selected from Edwards, Jones, Milijas, Hunt and Jarvis and the strikers will be two from Doyle, Fletcher and Ward. It was hoped Henry might have his comeback game but he is not quite ready so in the absence too of Foley then Berra will likely be captain. Rather than worry about the fact that the team has had 4 games in the last fortnight McCarthy is instead saying that as there is no midweek game next week the players will have a full week to rest up before the next league game at Man City. He will be hoping for no further injuries and also not for a replay.

Some will argue that cup run will get in the way of the important league battles ahead but the Premier programme has no fixtures on 4th or 5th round weekends so no fixture backlog will result and I don’t think it ever does a team any harm to win football matches. It is the case that if Wolves go out the cup, and Albion who play at Reading  go out also, then the Black Country derby will be brought forward to the blank weekend. But lets think about that if and when it happens and for now enjoy an unpressurised cup tie in Yorkshire.
