Having finally hauled themselves out of the relegation positions Wolves have the unenviable task of protecting their coveted 17th place at the City of Manchester Stadium on Saturday at 15:00. The tightness of the league with only 2 points separating 14th and 20th means that there will be plenty of changing of positions in the league after every game but at least Wolves are fully in the mix when it was feared not long ago that they could have a gap to make up to stand a chance of survival.
Man City will go into the game in 2nd place and as the genuine title contenders that the massive financial investment was intended to achieve. They are two points below United and have played two games more and they have also played a game more than the three teams below them. So they need a win tomorrow to keep the pressure on and will be expected to get three points. A win would actually take them top as United do not play until Sunday. They have added to their multi million pound squad this week by bringing in Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg, with Santa Cruz and Bridge leaving. The Bosnian is expected to make his debut against Wolves. City lost at Molineux at the end of October but have won 7 drawn 4 and lost only one league game since then.
Former City player Mick McCarthy has a couple of decisions to make regarding his team selection. The main one will be whether to play both Doyle and Fletcher or opt for a 5 man midfield. David Edwards is not fit to play but Karl Henry has done a full week’s training and will be in the squad. Craddock and Mouyokolo are also available for consideration for the defence. With Elokobi suspended there will also be a forced change to the back line that has improved enormously in recent weeks. My expectation is the following team;
Hennessey
Zubar, Stearman, Berra, Ward
Jarvis, Foley, Henry, Milijas, Hunt
Doyle
There have been some minor movements on the transfer front for Wolves in the last couple of days. The promising 20 year old Dundee striker Leigh Griffiths is now training with the club pending his £150,000 transfer from the cash strapped Scottish club. The youngster got 22 goals in 47 games for Livingstone before joining Dundee and maintaining that record with 21 goals in 46 games. He has been capped for Scotland at U18, U21 and B level. Meanwhile Greg Halford’s loan to Portsmouth has been renewed until the end of the season and youngster John Dunleavy has gone to Barnet on loan for experience.
So a tough game for Wolves this weekend and a point would be a massive and probably unexpected gain. Fellow strugglers Villa and Birmingham meet this weekend as do Wigan and Fulham so draws from those games would go down well. West Ham will do well to win at home to Arsenal while Albion meet the increasingly unbelievable Blackpool. At least after the Chelsea win Wolves know that they will still be well in touch whatever the outcome on Saturday, and they will be keen to maintain the excellent showings against all the top teams so far this season.
