Steve Sidwell could be on his way to Wolverhampton Wanderers after West Ham United stalled in their discussions with the Aston Villa man.
Sidwell, 28, had agreed terms with Wolves in December before an offer from West Ham provided the former Reading and Chelsea man a chance to be closer to his family.
But with the east London club unable to agree a deal with Sidwell, the transfer to Wolves is now set to be resurrected.
Sidwell was in the stands during Wolves’ 1-0 win over Chelsea at Molineux on Wednesday, with prospective new manager Mick McCarthy after the game revealing the player’s allegiance to the West Midlands club.
“He’s a Wolves fan – didn’t you know?” McCarthy said.
“I haven’t spoken to him, so there’s nothing much I can say. A fee had been agreed with the clubs beforehand. His family were closer to West Ham and I had no gripe with that at all.”
“But if he’s available and we can agree a fee and terms I’d take him in a heartbeat.”
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey confirmed that the club had renewed their discussions with Villa.
“We’d been in discussions with Villa way before Christmas over signing Steve before West Ham became involved,” Moxey said.
“We’re currently talking to them some more about the possibility of signing him permanently.”
