Ah the memories of the late 80’s milk advert starring two scouse scallies and a mention of Ian Rush!
For those not from the UK, or not old enough that will be meaningless, but suffice to say every Brit old enough remembers it well…
Anyway – Newcastle’s reserve looking team made it through to the next round of the Carling Cup last night thanks to a 3-2 win at the aforementioned Accrington.
In fact it took a last gasp goal from the hosts to bring it back to within one goal at the end so wasn’t quite as close a shave as it first appears.
The biggest bummer about that late Accrington goal was that it cost me a little accumulator bet I had yesterday on Tottenham winning by 2 or more goals, and Newcastle doing the same – but I’ll not let my bitterness cloud my thoughts…
The team was made up of senior players on the fringes of the current first team (Ameobi, Ryan Taylor, Lovenkrands) and various kids with a whopping 11 changes from Sunday’s match.
It was the three more senior players that I mentioned who got the goals, and we are safely through, humiliation avoided.
The draw for the next round will be made on Saturday when the teams in European competition will join in the fun and games.
