Young Boys; Champions League Draw

By: Chris99 | August 26th, 2010

Arry’s facial expression says it best. Yeah, it sucks, but it is what it is.

Group A: Inter, Werder Bremen, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Twente

Group B: Lyon, Benfica, Schalke, Hapoel Tel Aviv

Group C: Manchester United, Valencia, Rangers, Bursaspor

Group D: Barcelona, Panathinaikos, Copenhagen, FC Rubin Kazan

Group E: Bayern Munich, Roma, FC Basel, CFR Cluj

Group F: Chelsea, Marseille, Spartak Moscow, MSK Zilina

Group G: AC Milan, Real Madrid, Ajax, Auxerre

Group H: Arsenal, Shakhtar Donetsk, SC Braga, FK Partizan

In my humble opinion, I think we have the second toughest group, the first being AC Milan’s. Inter are Inter, so we all know what to expect there. Despite losing Jose, they are still one of the best sides in the world. They are organized, experienced, and have a deadly finisher in Milito. The toughest member at the party.

They certainty didn’t open their Bundesliga campaign with a bang, losing to TSG Hoffenheim 4-1. However, Werder are no push over. The Almeida/Pizzaro paring is a tricky one and Claudio seems to have a knack for scoring Champion’s League goals. In addition to the strength up top, they have Per in the back. His single syllable name does not do justice to just how big of a pain in the ass he can be for opposing attackers.

They won the Dutch Eredivisie last year. Steve McClaren has left, as has a large number of their players (I think). Marko Arnautović was a complete failure at Inter last year (no thanks to Jose) and is now at Werder. The connections between himself and the teams in Group A are incredible. That’s the extent of my knowledge on FC Twente.

In summation, the draw was gruesome. But not impossible.

A few points on the Young Boys match:

Crouchy didn’t loose a single header all night. Not one. Even if he didn’t put three in the back of the net, it would of been a great performance. But he did. Well done Peter. After his horrendous performance in the first leg, Assou-Ekotto made everything better again. He was reading passing lanes with ease and was very confident and calm when he had the ball. Didn’t panic, just picked his head up and found the open pass. Gareth Bale is a stud. The big/little combo of Defoe/Crouch will be missed. Defoe will go under the knife to fix up a groin injury which he has been carrying since the World Cup. His month long absence is not something ‘Arry (or any of you) is looking forward to. With our qualification for the group stage and the unfortunate reality that is Group A, we’re probably going to see the Spurs boring market come to an end. The extra £20 million should help a bit too.Palacios was uncharacteristically sloppy a few times last night. Just something that caught my eye. Watching Gomes trying to signal the bench for 35 minutes in the first half for a sub was hysterical. The fact that Harry flat out ignored him for those 35 minutes was even better.48 years in a loooooooong time. Great job Spurs.
