Could Port Vale be Carling Cup semifinalists?

By: timmyg | August 25th, 2010

Port_Vale_FCIt’s no secret that Fulham have not fared well in the Carling Cup in recent years. Part because of weakened line-ups, but mostly because of late our opponents go on to the semifinals of the competition. Don’t laugh, but could this year be a blessing for today’s opponent League Two side Port Vale? Consider this:

Last season, Fulham lost to Manchester City 2-1 in extra time in the Third Round of the competition. Fulham had received a bye in the second round and entered in the third because of their European qualification. Manchester City would go on to lose in the Semifinals to eventual champions, Manchester United.

In 2008-09, Fulham lost 1-0 to Burnley in the Second Round. Burnley would knock out titans Chelsea and Arsenal, only to lose in the semifinals to Tottenham on aggregate, thanks to a Jermain Defoe goal at the very end of extra time — this after losing the first leg 4-1. Spurs would then lose the final to United on penalties.

In 2006-07, Fulham lost to League Two side Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 in the Second Round. Wycombe would eventually meet Chelsea in the semifinals, and lose 5-1 on aggregate. Chelsea would go on to win the ugly, brawling final over Arsenal.

So the first team we faced in the Carling Cup made it to the semifinals in the last three out of four seasons. I suppose that is something we can hang our hat on?

If we look back a bit further and notice how the teams we lost to fared, sometimes with a few degrees of separation, things get a bit uncanny.

In 2005-06, Fulham lost to West Bromwich Albion in the Third Round. West Brom would then lose to Manchester United in the next round, who would then go on and win the trophy. In 2004-05, Fulham made it to the quarter-finals and faced rivals Chelsea. Chelsea would win the game 2-1, and go on to win the trophy over Liverpool in extra time.In 2003-04, Fulham lost to Wigan in the Second Round. Wigan would then lose to Middlesbrough in the Third Round. Boro would then go on and win the final over Bolton. In 2001-02, Fulham’s first year in the Premier League, Fulham would lose to Spurs in the Fourth Round. Spurs would then lose the final to Blackburn Rovers. In 2000-01, Fulham would make it to the quarterfinals and lose to Liverpool 3-0 after extra time. Liverpool would then go on to win the final over Birmingham in penalties. In 1999-00, Fulham would (again) make it to the quarterfinals (and again) lose. This time Leicester City would win 3-0 on penalties after equalizing the match in extra time. Leicester City would then win the final over Tranmere Rovers.

So of the last 11 seasons, four times did Fulham’s opponent go on and appear in the Cup final (three times that opponent won). Twice the team we lost to would lose to the eventual Cup champions. If I really wanted to stretch this point, than we could also include the 2007-08 season where we lost to Bolton, who then immediately lost to Manchester City, who then immediately lost to the title-winner’s Spurs.

In conclusion, only thrice in the last 11 seasons has our victorious opponents not make it to at least the semifinals. So if Fulham manage to succumb to Micky Adams’ Valiants, then watch out for them in December.
