Normally this time of the week I would assemble a loaner report to, well, report on how our players plying their trade elsewhere are doing.
Well, turns out Fulham currently do not have anyone out on loan. Now, that can change at any point as clubs in the Football League can sign players on loan outside of the transfer windows.
But two nuggets raise my eyebrow: 1) the 25 man squad that was announced about two weeks ago and 2) that Fulham scrapped their Reserve Team this past summer.
First, the 25 man squad:
Goalies: Mark Schwarzer, David Stockdale
Defenders: John Pantsil, Fredrik Stoor, Aaron Hughes, Rafik Halliche, Chris Baird, Brede Hangeland, Carlos Salcido, Stephen Kelly
Midfielders: Zoltan Gera, Clinton Dempsey, Bjorn Helge Riise, Dickson Etuhu, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Danny Murphy, Jonathan Greening, Simon Davies, Damien Duff
Forwards: Andrew Johnson, Diomansy Kamara, Moussa Dembele, Bobby Zamora, David Elm, Eddie Johnson. (Per soccernet, Fulham can also use young players including: Matthew Briggs, Alex Smith, Alexander Kacaniklic, Matthew Saunders, Lauri Dalla Valle, Keanu Marsh-Brown)
So where does that leave players like Pascal Zuberbuhler and Robert Milsom? Well, Milsom just got back from his stint at TPS Turku, so I think he’ll be resting a bit. But Zubs? I’d imagine a club in the Championship would love to have a keeper of his stature, but currently he is residing in footballing purgatory.
Oh, also missing from the 25 man roster is Phillipe Senderos, but he is currently hanging out with Bobby Zamora and others in the infirmary.
Speaking of Bobby, his injury should provide a chance for David Elm to see some action. Before yesterday I would have assumed Elm would be sent out on loan somewhere. But with AJ, Kamara, and Bobby currently all out with longterm injuries — neither have a return date according to PhysioRoom — I think Hughes may have to use the big Swede, even as a benchwarmer.
The injuries to our squad make our current situation very interesting. Last October Kevin Palmer wrote an interesting piece about how Spurs have elected sending their players out on loan over fielding a reserve team. Fulham decided to do the latter but have yet to do the former.
Things may very well change, but with all the injuries to the squad — PhysioRoom has us leading that table. Woot! — there might not be any loans for the near future.
Which means I gotta find something else to write about on Monday mornings. Ah crap.
