The Hammers said hello and goodbye to all nationalities this summer and here is a quick summary of the in’s and out’s.
In
Fred Piquionne – a French striker who was brought in from Lyon. Been around playing for Monaco, Rennes, Nimes and was on loan at Portsmouth where he caught the eye of Avram Grant.
Thomas Hitzlsperger – German midfielder who spent a miserable year at Lazio after 125 games at Stuttgart and five years at Aston Villa. “Der Hammer” has yet to make his “official” debut for the Hammers, and could be a new crowd favorite. Recently made captain of the German National side.
Pablo Barrera – wunderkind Mexican who cost £4 million from Pumas. 18 goals in 85 games for Pumas and likely to be a great player if he can settle to the Premier League. Only 23 years old, but has played 25 times for the Mexican national side.
Tal Ben-Haim – Israeli defender who is on loan from Portsmouth. He has plenty of Premier League experience with Manchester City, Chelsea, Bolton and Sunderland. Obviously rated highly by Avram Grant.
Winston Reid – New Zealand defender who was a real star at the World Cup for NZ, brought in from FC Midtjylland.
Ruud Boffin – great name isn’t it? Belgian goalie who has been at PSV Eindhoven and recently at MVV Maastricht. He will be Rob Green’s understudy this season.
Lars Jacobsen – a Danish defender who was brought in from Blackburn Rovers just before the close of the transfer window on a free transfer.
Vic Obinna – the Nigerian striker is on loan from Internazionale. He has scored 11 times for Nigeria in 34 appearances which is better than his club form so far.
Out
Guillermo Franco – the Argentinean striker who plays for Mexico was released after joining from Villarreal. He played 23 games last season and scored five times. Currently he is still unattached and looking for his next club despite still being in the Mexico national team.
Ilan – Brazilian striker released after he was brought in on a free transfer from Saint-Etienne. He played 11 times for the Hammers and scored four goals. He has recently signed with the Brazilian side, Internacional.
Mido – Egyptian striker who thankfully left after 9 appearances on the loan period from Middlesboro, who now is at Ajax after a free transfer.
Bondz N’Gala – London born defender who left for Plymouth Argyle on a free transfer after being on loan last season to anyone who would take him.
Alessandro Diamanti – superstar Italian midfielder, runner-up Hammer of the Year, who was also the Hammers second leading scorer last season, joined Brescia for £1.8 million. He will be missed.
Fabio Daprelà – Swiss born defender who made seven appearances last year left to join Diamante at Brescia. Don’t all say “who” at once….
