Blackpool 2, Liverpool 1: Rock Bottom, For Now

By: Ed | October 3rd, 2010
roy

Blackpool live up to Ian Holloway’s words and take it to Liverpool at Anfield.

But is that really an accomplishment anymore?

A manager content to let things play out slowly and painfully, a group of players that look uninspired and disorganized, and a fan base so alienated from a club that’s barely recognizable. It’s sad, it’s disappointing, and it’s unbelievably painful. This is Liverpool.

I’m taking some time as usual, share your thoughts below in the meantime. Seems like there’s plenty to say, but I either don’t want to or can’t find the words.

PrintPrint articleShare.wp-notable img {border: none;margin-left:5px;}digg: reddit: stumbleupon:TawfiqTo add to my misery here is my expectations:
Everton 2 - LFC 0
Napoli 2 - LFC 0
LFC 0 - Blackburn Rovers 0
Bolton Wanderers 1 - LFC 0
By that time I think I will stop watching anymore matches and will read the news and not participate in any more blogs, if God forbid LFC play Championship football I will stop watching any type of soccer match..
I dont see anything positive at the moment and I cant imagine what new owners can do at this stage, clearly Roy is under heavy pressure and he cant handle it anymore. Unless he resigns after Everton's lost and Dalglish takes control and the new owner invests in a huge spending bonanza and re shapes the players again and a new delima starts..
I dont know what to say anymore..
Sorry guys for my gloomy feelings but I was hurt by todays match.. It hurts more than losing to Man Utd and more than anything Ive seen so far..

Now Chelski guys are making fun of Joe Cole!!
I just hope he reads them..
Anyone has Cole's e-mail????
DenbaileyI am a fulham fan and truly sorry to see this happening to Liverpool as in the 70,s I went to anfield a number of times regarding hodgeson all of us are glad he is gone as an article in our fanzine one f in fulham hodgeson got lucky is a must read we are glad he is gone and feel you must do the same good luck & start climbingNoelI'd be interested in reading that article (as I'm sure many here would) if you had a link to it.AnuragThese are not the times in football where one can stick to one mode of play or single style of arrangement on the field. Managers are required to be versatile in their approach. Certainly Roy lacks that quality. When he took over, he had a system already at place, that was well suited to all most all the talented lads at the club. Understandably there were changes required to pick the team up form the 7 th spot, but we are moving in the wrong direction. All roy got to do was bring in a replacement for Mascherano, i mean like for like not a dud like Poulsen. Aquilani was already fit, to pair in the midfield had it not worked, we could have pulled Gerrad back and Kuyt could have played the CF role. There was no need to sell Benayoun, who with Cole would have provided us enough creativity. We ended up 7th because we did not have an able backup for Torres which is still the case, it had less to do with Rafa more to do with money. the whole point here is that the team really did not need a fix, and when you try to fix things which are not broken , Blackpool happens !steven.pardon me while i play in traffic.DNABe thanful that you have traffic. In my nook of the world, there is no traffic. My best bet is to get mauled by a wolf which by the looks of it watched the game and have lost all interest in instilling fear in the hearts of men.GalahadThreepwoodJust shocked and reeling at the moment. I thought we could win this game, I really did. Still trying to understand how we could have fallen this far this fast.

A few observations, in no particular order:

. Once again we had a terrible first half. Blackpool had most of the possession and chances, while we looked lethargic and out of ideas. It seemed like Blackpool won every ball in the air and every challenge on the ground in that half..

. Poulsen was a complete non-factor. Why is he in the starting 11?

. I think Varney was offside on Blackpool's second goal, but it really doesn't matter. We had played so poorly up to that point that we deserved to be 2-0 down.

. We finally showed an interest in the game in the second half, but by that point the hole was so deep that it would take a titanic effort to get back out. But still, we showed intent and purpose in the second 45 minutes, and finally looked dangerous in attack. Why can't we play that way for a full 90?

. Even in the second half, when we were desperately trying to get back in the game and salvage a point, we had trouble creating chances in open play. We had plenty of runs into their area, but once we got into the attacking third it seemed like we couldn't decide what to do next. There were a couple of good crosses from Kuyt, and if Cole's shot had been a foot or two to the left we might be talking about a different result, but other than that, we looked stumped for ideas. Compare our efforts to Tottenham Hotspur's game against Villa yesterday. Good crosses into the box and good play in the air from Crouch led to a couple of goals, and they were threatening throughout. That's what a Premier League contender looks like. Not like us.

. Speaking of Tottenham's game yesterday, look at the way Villa played. Yeah, they lost, but whenever they got stops on defense, they played the ball out on the ground, got their midfield involved, and built some pretty solid chances of their own. Why can't we play that way?

. Glen Johnson frustrates the hell out of me. He committed the foul that led to Blackpool's penalty, he put a beautiful chance at goal into the stands, and just generally played like crap today. He is my personal nemesis on this team. I say either move him to the wing or bench him and put Kelly in.

. Another person who frustrates the hell out of me is Roy Hodgson. Hey, Roy? You don't like the high expectations at Liverpool? Go back to %@#ing Fulham. Or Burnley. Or West Ham. Actually, I don't care where you go. Just shut up or take your fricking attitude to a mid-table side. It's where you belong.

. I'm so frustrated and angry right now. I really think this team is better than what we've seen so far, but they have yet to prove it. And it feels like we're running out of time.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure Torres is hurt again. Just the icing on a crap cake at this point.Mark CloptonIm a villa fan and i just want to say that its mad you are protesting against the owners. ok they need to go but its not there fault you lost to blackpool. its the players and managersarniepieWhat we can only hope for right now is that the club doesn't fall to low at the moment, until we can regroup again in the summer. Where by then hopefully, we'll have new owners and the funds and the control for Hodgson to rebuild this side.
Somehow I feel that from the significant signings that Hodgson solely has made this season (see below), that the mature age players were brought in to bring stability to this side to perform the exact task of not falling too far.
I believe that it may be bad now, but I'm sure things will look up somewhat (definitely not in the bottom half of the table) in the next couple of months, but unless the aforementioned things occur by this summer, there could be some serious ramifications by the close of this season.

Meireles (age= 27)
Konchesky (age=29)
Poulsen (age=30)
Kenet_550111If protest against the owner is long term, protest against Roy must be immediate lest Liverpool would be playing in lower league come May. So far I have persistently called him a coward and sadly he has proved it through his idiotic comments and inexcusable excuses. I called him brainwashing fans into believing Liverpool is small club and blatantly he has done that too. If rafa Liverpool 7th placing was not good enough and got the boot. How about Roy? Medias might continue blaming the players, proclaiming Roy is only trying his best and not to be blamed. But fans would find it hilarious at it's pinnacle. I am not worried, justice will prevail. Owners will be gone, Roy would be shamed for his cowardice but not his incompetent as not everybody is as talented as rafa. Liverpool will move on but the question is from where?XabiPurslow must take full responsibility. He's the man who sacked Rafa, he's the man who said no to Kenny, he's the man who hired a manager who's won nothing of any note in his 35 years in the game. I don't want Hodgson in charge, never did. I won't blame him though. He got offered a once in a lifetime opportunity and let his vanity make the decision for him. What's happening now is testament to what happens at any club when figures from the business world such as Broughton and Purslow are given authority to make footballing decisions. Hodgson was right about one thing since he's been at the club and thats the amount of deadwood at it. Now he's a part of it himself. God must be a manc.Hicks HaterHodgson will probably say yet again, in his best mid-table manager voie, that expectations at Anfield are too high. Excuse me Roy but if your expectations don't include beating Northampton and Blackpool at Anfield then there is something seriously wrong. Roy, you seem like a decent guy: do the decent thing and resign- you're simply not up to managing a team of this stature. No excuses- just go!Razlan_bmwbring back rafaaaaaaaaaIHatetheliverpoolteamofnowI'm absolutely speechless. The first half, that was one of the most awful display of football from Liverpool. 2nd half was better but desperate.

Where can I join a protest against erm.... who should I protest against? Too many of them... Hicks, Gillet? Purslow, broughton? OR Roy Hodg son of a b.imranbutt@hotmail.com@ arniepie - i think Rafa has to take the lion's share for leaving a team that has zero depth in terms of squad strength. We need new owners and cash to buy proper players - players like Nani or Walcott who can run at defences and cause problems. And God's sake it's time to sell Torres cause this is a striker that will never be fit enough to play a whole season. Unload him and get players who take the pace!NoelRafa got us to 2nd with the 7th most expensive side in the Prem. I don't understand how it's his fault he wasn't able to spend top four money to have a squad with top four depth. It's not his fault he was never allowed to re-invest the money he recovered from Keane, or that he was only given half the Alonso money.

Besides, Rafa didn't ship out for free--or allow to be shipped out--Aquilani and Insua while turning a £12M+ profit this summer in the transfer market before standing up and saying we were overstaffed anyhow.

If we've got such thin squad depth, why are we shipping out players for nothing? And how is that, in any imaginable world, the fault of our former manager? I mean, I know Sky sports and the Daily Fail have been going on about that, but I want somebody to give me some facts on this one rather than just saying it over and over again to make it true.

Fact: until last season, Benitez finished ahead of teams with more expensive squads.
Fact: his last two seasons he broke even or turned a profit in the market and wasn't allowed to fully invest in strengthening the squad.
Fact: he didn't ship out two players at least good enough for the top half of the Prem for zero return because the squad was "overstaffed."

Please, somebody, back up with a rational, fact based argument how Benitez ruined LFC? Bueller? Bueller? Anybody?

And before anybody says it, this isn't to say he was perfect or would have us top of the table or that his position wasn't likely untenable when he left or etcetera, it's to say people should stop the thoughtless blaming of him for the current problems unless they can actually argue their bloody point.arniepieI understand your point, but somehow reading the Independent article which is posted by justin (Cheers), it just seems obvious that so many of the thing Rafa wanted to do to provide a team with depth, proper players etc. were just out of his control. We all know the problems we've had with money and the mismanagement from the suits - just look at the sacking of Parry and the issues with the owners- and I think that's just the case here. One clear example is the handling of the Alonso/Barry debacle. Benitez had no control of this situation, and due to the incompetence of the suits, it turned out the way it did.
What Benitez brought for the club was the best it could manage with what it had. This can obviously be disputed seeing as we finished seventh, but with injuries left right and centre, a definite lack of strength in the side, and having to deal with the higher-ups, perhaps expectations were to high.justinAnyone who hasn't read this, should.

http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/liverpool-is-my-home-and-i-will-come-back-2362665.htmlakuniLost lost lost and yet another lost for Liverpool today..really really disappointed and frustrated!!!!Mark_butler12Disgusting is all that I can say! Liverpool must now be the joke of the Premier league!arniepieSeriously have no words to describe how I feel.
The problems of last year appear to be minuscule compared to what's going on now. Just lost for words. There is a pain in my heart from all this, and I know all you others that bleed red can share this anguish.
It's also all been made even worst by realizing what a bad mistake it was to let Rafa go after reading the Independent article on the old gaffer.

Red2deathI'm just waiting for Hodgson to congratulate Blackpool on a fantastic effort, and then say his team did well too. Almost there, just a bit unlucky eh, Roy?

Tricky start to the season, fair enough. But then losses against Blackpool and Northampton, draw against Sunderland. What's the excuse now Hodgson?

For this man, at the end of his tenure there'll be videos on Youtube to showcase his cluelessness. Right up there with George Bush. The Best of Roy Hodgson, 2010-2010.blog comments powered by Disqus
