van der Vaart strikes a familiar pose as he opens the scoring against FC Twente
Well it was wet and it was miserable, but this time it was the weather and not our performance.
FC Twente are no pushovers as they proved against Inter so this was a good result, especially with only ten men. Steve McLaren left a decent team behind him when he left and this could have been a banana skin but everybody played their part and the result ended up being emphatic. Gareth Bale was once again at his marauding best down the left flank, van der Vaart was running the show and all was well at the Lane.
What was with vdV last night? He seemed Hell bent on doing everything you could possibly do in a football match in one game. Missing a penalty, scoring, yellow cards, sending off. All I know is we have him for four years and, on this evidence, he’s gonna be a lot of fun.
Our midfield maestro has been described as another Denis Bergkamp recently, though presumably one who can board an aeroplane without the help of a ‘B.A Baracus’ style anaesthetic cheeseburger. You can see the similarities, he has the little flicks and the back heels and the vision but when Crouch rose at the far post like some magnificent blonde daddy longlegs and headed the ball down to the Dutchman, his finish was more akin to that of a certain German who used to strut his stuff at White Hart Lane some years ago. Bergkamp, with a dash of Klinsmann? I like the sound of that!
Apart from van der Vaart’s entertaining shenanigans, another feature of this game was that it wasn’t only rain sodden but it also rained penalties. All three in my opinion were justified. Some, including Harry being his usual magnanimous self, are suggesting that the third one was a bit soft. I disagree. The handball has to be intentional, and the player brought his arm up to protect his face. Now unless he is afflicted with a ‘Dr Strangelove’ type arm with a will of it’s own then it was indeed intentional and therefore a penalty. You don’t protect yourself with your arm like some great jessie. If you do you pay the consequences and all the mincing around the referee and whinging in the world won’t change that fact.
So to sum up, this was a very convincing win. Inter are above us in group A on goal difference (only the one) and things are on course. We will be without Defoe, Dawson and van der Vaart for the visit to Milan which is a shame but nevertheless I think we can still get a draw and then, barring any disasters, we can start to dream about how we will do in the knock out stages. Exciting times.
