A Dempsey Solution?

If you had to pick one player from Everton’s squad that has disappointed this season who would it be?  A lot of people would point to our strikers and name Louis Saha, or Yakubu, or even Jermain Beckford.

Before he left for Spurs, Steven Pienaar would have certainly been in this conversation as well. These layers are certainly worthy candidates, but the one player who sticks out most in my mind would have to be Mikel Arteta, our Spanish maestro.

He already looks good in one shade of blue, why not another? He already looks good in one shade of blue, why not another

Now I can already hear the cries of Arteta fans protesting this claim, but think about it. Excluding his goal against Liverpool back in October, when was the last time Arteta had a really good game this season. While his work rate has continued to be good along with his defense, Arteta’s creative abilities in the midfield have been small if not nonexistent.

This lack of creativity has hurt Everton almost as much as the inability of our strikers to put the ball in the back of the net. This is where American international and current Fulham starter Clint Dempsey could help Everton for the forseeable future. Now let it be known I am not advocating getting rid of Arteta, but the fact that the team has to rely on just one player for that creativity means that when Arteta is off his game, the whole team suffers. Dempsey is no stranger to the big stage having scored goals for the US against England and Spain in the World Cup and Confederations Cup respectively, along with several important goals for Fulham including one against Liverpool in 2007 to keep Fulham in the EPL. Dempsey is one of the few bright spots on a team that could very well be headed to the Championship this season, and Everton could use Dempsey’s ability push for a European spot.

Dempsey would fit in well either in the center of midfield in a role similar to Arteta’s, or Dempsey could move out to the right flank, or if it would work for him he could team up with Leighton Baines on the left to form an absolutely devastating combination on the left flank.

Now I know that wishing for Dempsey is probably a pipe dream. He is undoubtedly expensive, Fulham are unlikely to sell one of their top players during a possible relegation battle, and Everton also have a very small transfer fund; but wouldn’t it be wonderful to think about Dempsey and Donovan patrolling the flanks at Goodison. Hey an Evertonian can dream right? Until next time guys COYB!

A quick note, this article was inspired and partially written by Taylor Nelson. Most of the ideas about Dempsey were from Taylor’s email, and I added my own thoughts and did some editing to the piece. A big thanks for the article and idea.
