One or two rumours but the signs are that there may be no further new faces at Molineux in the January transfer window. Adam Hamill from Barnsley will add cover to the wide positions and may even be hard to shift if he does get a chance. And Leigh Griffiths from cash strapped Dundee will likely be one for the future rather than this season.
Wolves fans might have expected chances to see both the new guys in action in the next few days. Hamill in the FA Cup Fourth Round tie at home to Stoke on Sunday. And the following night Griffiths when Man Utd are the opponents for Wolves reserves at Telford. But Hamill is cup tied and Griffiths suspended so neither will be in for the cup tie but both might feature for the reserves.
The crowds around the country have generally been poor for the FA Cup games and even though this weekend’s game is a local derby I suspect there will be quite a few empty seats. Sad that the great competition is following the Carling Cup as a poor relation to the Premier League. But if Wolves were to beat Stoke then they will be only three games from the final and maybe the interest will start to rise.
The cup game comes just three days before the next Premier League game at Bolton on Wednesday so we can expect a few players to be rested on Sunday. That will likely give chances to the likes of Hahnemann, Craddock, Mouyokolo, Edwards, Elokobi and Vokes. Stoke changed virtually the whole team in the last round and they have a game at Liverpool on Wednesday so will probably do the same this round. So with half the reserve teams in action a large crowd can hardly be expected.
Much more in the minds of the fans is the fight to avoid relegation which is starting to get narrowed down to a few teams. The likes of Liverpool, Everton, Villa and probably Fulham are as expected starting to pull away leaving Wolves, Albion, Birmingham, Wigan and West Ham to fight it out with Blackpool at last looking like they might fall into the mire as they were forecast to do all along. If Charlie Adam as expected joins Liverpool in the next few days that will be a big blow for them. Wigan show no signs of improving. Blues have tried and failed to bring in the striking reinforcements they needed and with Scott Dann out for the season they will lose the settled defence that has been their biggest asset. Albion have the worst defensive record in the division. And although West Ham have brought in a couple of players in the window they are not looking like the types to change things significantly and they still have Grant as manager. So if Wolves can string some results together they will have the chance to avoid the drop.
The coming games at Bolton and Arsenal and at home to Man Utd won’t be easy but after those games the opportunities start to come. The two Black Country derbies are growing in importance all the time and there is a home game against Blackpool that has a must win look about it. It’s all going to be very close and nervy but the chance to stick around in the top flight is still there and hopefully this time next year it will be a little less stressful.
