News/rumors from around the web – Jan 15th

We’re being linked with a whole bunch of young players that everyone else is also after. Highly doubt we’re going to attempt to outbid anyone if it does come down to a matter of which club can offer more. Sir Alex’s idea of value is typically less than what the generally (inflated) market value is. With that said, here’s who we’re supposedly after:

Fabio Coentrao – The Portuguese leftback/winger has really come into his own recently and his impressive performances at the World Cup caught everyones attention. His marauding runs down the left could make him a decent and cheaper alternative to those eyeing Gareth Bale (since apparently, everyone wants him too, but Spurs won’t be letting him go). We’re in it to have him replace Evra, who has been rumored to be leaving in the summer. It’ll be tough to see him leave since he’s always been so committed to the United cause and has spoken of his love of the club and it’s history in the past.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – After missing out on Gareth Bale a few years ago, it appears that we’re again destined to miss out on the next big thing out of Southampton. Arsenal are supposedly the frontrunners to obtain his signature, but that hasn’t quelled the rumors that a host of other clubs remain interested. Chamberlain Sr who coached Walcott in the past, has spoken about how his son is the better prospect between the two. Did you really expect a father to say anything else? Even if we are interested, I see us losing out to Arsenal on this one.

Sergio Busquets – This is a surprising one for me since he seems to be a poor man’s Owen Hargreaves. Considering our more dire need is for a creative sort in that part of the field and that his credentials would result in a rather high price tag, I can’t see Sir Alex agreeing on a reasonable fee for the player. When you have won pretty much everything there is to win in the football world and you play for one of the best clubs in the world, you are never going to leave for a value price. I would rather see us dig deep into our pockets for a young Paul Scholes replacement. We have decent Hargo replacements in Fletch and Ando.
