There’s always the worry when you visit a top six team that your team will end up getting a thumping and you go home feeling rather crest fallen – but as at Man. Utd and Chelsea already this season Wolves came away from the City of Manchester Stadium with an honourable defeat and deserving of getting something from the game.
It was a bold team selection by McCarthy who stuck with the 4-4-2 option with Fletcher and Doyle up front, and with Henry on the bench and Foley and Edwards injured they went into battle without a defensive midfield player as it was Milijas and Jones in central midfield. They took the initiative in the game from the word go and were by far the better team in the first half hour. And after 12 minutes they were in front. A Jarvis cross saw an attempted clearance hit Kolo Toure and rebound into the 6 yard box where Milijas’s first attempt was parried by Hart but the Serbian got to the rebound and prodded the ball home. Milijas and Jarvis combined again with Hart saving Milijas’s header before Hunt and Fletcher combined on the left and Fletch pulled the ball back across goal to Jarvis whose goalbound shot was blocked by Kolarov.
Inevitably City eventually upped the tempo but with Berra and Stearman outstanding they were creating little. Hennessey saved one from Johnson and Tevez shot just over but Wolves looked capable of holding their advantage until a scrappy goal evened things up 5 minutes before the break. A corner found its way through to Kolo Toure on the far post and his shot through a crowded 6 yards box squirmed under Jones foot and dribbled into the net. Hennessey then made a fine save to keep out a powerful Kolarov shot to keep Wolves level at the break.
But in the second half there was 20 minutes of Tevez inspired play from City that turned the game around. He put City ahead with a goal that was reminiscent of one Maradona scored against England in the World Cup (not the hand of god one the other one) as he dribbled past Hunt, Berra and Stearman before slotting home. And City’s 3rd goal was also a peach but more of a team goal as Tevez fed Dzeko who played a through ball to Yaya Toure who beat Hennessey. Wolves gave City a brief shock as Zubar headed against the bar from a Jarvis corner but City were soon 4-1 up when a Tevez header went in off the underside of the bar.
It was party time for City fans as they celebrated going top of the league and Wolves fans wondered whether a major hammering was coming. But what a shock was in store for City. Their sub Lescott pushed Doyle in the area and the Irishman comfortably converted the resulting penalty. The goal surprisingly quickly silenced the home crowd and although Hennessey made one good save from Tevez, Wolves regained the initiative. Henry replaced Fletcher and Mouyokolo replaced Ward. Mouyokolo played right back with Zubar going left, and Wolves adopted a 4-3-3 with Doyle supported by Hunt and Jarvis. Then after Mijango Bia replaced Jarvis Wolves made it 4-3. Bia’s corner was headed goalwards by Zubar and it was over the line before De Jong cleared.
That goal came after 86 minutes and the 4th offficial indicated 5 minutes added time as the nerves of the home fans were fraying. Milijas produced a Tevez like run but was finally dispossed in the area, Berra had joined the attack as City were holding on grimly and Wolves almost got an incredible draw. A Mujangi Bia shot looked like going in the corner but hit a defender and deflected just wide of the opposite post. With Wolves throwing everyone forward City almost got a late 5th when their sub Milner got away but his effort was cleared off the line by Henry.
Hennessey – had an excellent game making some good saves and is dominating his area much more effectively nowadays
Zubar – excellent defensively and going forward
Stearman – I made him Wolves best player and Craddock will not regain his place easily
Berra – also outstanding but for one slip second half when Hennessey came to his rescue
Ward – sometimes troubled by Johnson and was leaving him to much space to receive the crossfield passes
Jarvis – caused City problems especially when switching to the left wing
Jones – not too effective for much of the game but was prominent in Wolves late rally
Milijas – really arrived in the Premier League now and matched the City midfield in creativity and as a goal threat
Hunt – typical workmanlike performance and a real pain to the City defence
Doyle – excellent control and exposed City’s centre backs all afternoon
Fletcher – probably his best game for Wolves so far. Combined well with Doyle and the wide players.
Good to see Henry get a few minutes. Mouyokolo and Mujangi Bia both made very good contributions when they came on.
So Wolves slipped back into the bottom three but at the same time convinced everyone that saw the game that they belong in the top flight. If they can maintain this level of performance until May then survival is a certainty.

Nice to see us scoring three goals in a game! Pity it came when the other team scored four. But yes, a great performance. And it was good to know that Lescott is still loyal to his old club! I also particularly liked Hennessy’s impressive saving tackle fifteen yards inside the City half.
