Wolves stun champions and maybe themselves

McCarthyWolves recorded a memorable and deserved win against the reigning Premier League Champions to climb from bottom to  outside the relegation positions on a highly significant Wednesday evening at Molineux. Wolves were ahead early and had to defend their lead for what felt like a very long evening, but did so with great credit and found the time to cause their opponents plenty of other problems.

McCarthy made some changes to the team that had performed over the holiday period presumably due to the need for fresh legs, with Ward and Ebanks Blake replaced by Doyle and Fletcher up front and Edwards coming in for Milijas in midfield. And it was a positive start for Wolves with Zubar bursting forward and bringing a good save from Cech with a left foot piledriver from 30 yards. And from the resulting corner Hunt curled the ball right into the Chelsea goal line where the ball seemed to go into the net off Bosingwa for an own goal. All that was needed then was to keep out the champions for 85 minutes.

John Terry amazingly didn’t even get a yellow card after raising his hands to Hunt’s head, and just before the half hour Hennessey saved Wolves when he got his foot to a Kalou effort. Chelsea continued pressing second half and Kalou and Malouda missed chances and Drogba hit the outside of the post, but Hunt also clipped the bar from a Wolves free kick. But despite the Blues having masses of possession the Wolves back line held firm in heroic style.

It would be difficult to pick out the stars from such a good team performance cause there were so many that made a valuable contribution. Hennessey, the keeper of promise who has struggled to get the confidence of the fans in his ability to dominate his area, is starting to look like the finished article and his speed off the line to foil Anelka was superb. Zubar in the first half and Elokobi in the second made  sparkling contributions while Stearman and Berra at the centre of defence were the men of the match for me. Hunt, Edwards and Foley were tireless in midfield where Jarvis was forced to be mostly a defensive winger to counteract the overlapping Cole. Doyle was excellent on his return while Fletcher would perhaps be the one disappointment.

A tremendous result that was well earned and restored all the belief that survival is within Wolves capabilities. There are plenty of difficult games coming up in the next month or so but Wolves are starting to look more adept at raising their game against the big boys than putting away fellow strugglers. But tonight Wolves put West Ham, Wigan and Villa into the relegation positions and are now also within one point of Albion, Birmingham and Fulham.  There will be plenty of ups and downs between now and May as Wolves run of WLWLWLW over the last 7 games shows clearly. But anywhere near that level of points return will be enough to keep Wolves in the top flight.
