Two goals from Carlos Tevez, one from Gareth Barry, and a sparkling display from Adam Johnson have paced Manchester City to an emphatic and satisfying 3-0 victory over Liverpool–the largest winning margin for City over Liverpool since 1937. Read on for a minute by minute report.
For City it’s Hart, Lescott, Kompany, Toure, Richards, Barry, Y Toure, De Jong, A Johnson, Milner, Tevez
Liverpool go with Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Carragher, G Johnson, Kuyt, Lucas, Gerrard, Jovanovic, Torres, N’Gog
Game on!
st minute: Not much going on in the opening minute until an offside is given against Torres. Crowd is singing.
rd minute: N’Gog has it down the left and wins a throw. Lucas plays an aimless ball into the box that city get away, but Liverpool have it back–good tackle there on N’Gog inside the box.
th minute. Early yellow card for Skrtel as he takes out A Johnson. Nothing comes from the free kick however.
th minute. Lescott loses out rather poorly to Gerrard, but City have it away again. Tevez comes back very deep for his first touch. Johnson fouled again down the right for City.
th minute. Johnson to take, he played it to Milner but nothing came of Milner’s pass. Liverpool are finding quite a bit of space in possession here in the early going. NGog takes a shot from distance but there’s no danger as Hart easily collects the rolling shot.
th minute. City now have it at the back, a foul this time given against City at midfield. Milner is wearing #7. He’ll be hoping to have a better debut with his new club than Stephen Ireland yesterday!
th minute. City escape some sloppy play at the back and come away on a break. City now have an attacking throw on the left.
th minute. Johnson lines up a shot from distance and so nearly connects! Powerful left footed shot looked goal-bound but it’s just a yard wide.
th minute. Is that the Sheikh himself in the stands tonight? I believe it is, sitting with Khaldoon al Mubarak and Garry Cook. At first I thought it might be David Silva.
th minute. Long goal kick from Hart ends up going over touch. Liverpool now throw it in but City get it back quickly.
th minute. Johnson now has it on the right, he tries to play through two players but that doesn’t work.
th minute. Johnson again on the right. He sneaks it through to Milner and he finds Barry who scores!!!!
City lead, 1-0. The two Villa old boys picked up where they left off 15 months ago.
th. City are on the board in the league this season–and it’s nice to be ahead. How will this change the flow of the game? Full credit to A Johnson for playing the right ball, and Milner for staying onside. Tevez nows comes forward on a good ball from Toure, he shots from a difficult angle and finds side netting.
th minute. Maybe City can push on from here and try to get a second sooner rather than later. A cool finish from the side of Barry’s left foot, by the way, he found the corner from about 12 yards out.
th minute. Alex Ferguson is looking on from the stands. Hart makes a punch, City break and will get a throw down the left as Carragher slides to prevent a corner. Lescott to take, he gets it right back in an offside position–that was a waster.
th minute. Miscommunication there between Kompany and Hart as Kompany clears it out when Hart wanted to collect it himself. No big deal.
th minute. De Jong win the ball well and City have it again, Tevez tries a sweeping cross-field by it’s nodded into touch for a City throw.
th minute. Another foul against Liverpool. Milner stands over the ball about 30 yards out, he plays a short ball to Johnson who lobs it in the box. Agger nods it away and City have a throw.
th minute. Liverpool looked pretty bright early on and still obviously pose a danger, but City are pretty much controlling things at the moment. Trying to make it 2 before halftime should be the goal.
st minute. Barry gets another chance to shoot, this time from distance, but it goes wide.
nd minute. Richards ventures forward on that break and does well to receive a pass and get rid of it. City now keeping the ball for a time. Johnson this time splits two defenders but can’t retain possession as he moves into the box. He looks very good tonight so far.
th minute. Torres has it 40 yards from goal and loses it. He can stay out there all night as far as I’m concerned. Barry avoids Kuyt’s lunge as City try to build down the left.
th minute. More City possession the last couple of minutes, finally a long ball for Tevez but that’s a goal kick.
th minute. Richards hoofs that one into the stands and Liverpool attack from the left, it’s off Kuyt for a goal kick.
th minute. After Tevez lost out in the box, Liverpool launched an attack but City defended quite stoutly. City come away with it and set up shop again, Kuyt with another foul. City have had quite a few free kicks in the first half hour.
th minute. Barry tries to find Tevez’s head but that doesn’t work. City come again, Johnson with a good low cross but no City connection. Then Lescott tries a cross aiming at Ya Ya Toure and City get a corner out of it after Agger’s header.
st minute. Corner taken short to A Johnson whose attempted curler is caught easily by Reina. Gerrard’s cross is cleared by Richard’s head, Agger tries a very ambitious volley from 40 yards and it’s miles wide.
rd minute. City catch a break there as Richards almost got ripped clean down the line there, but it’s a throw. Liverpool get it back and move forward.
th minute. Moment of danger there after Gerrard’s low cross! But no one can get to that for Liverpool. Eventually a low shot comes in and Hart takes with no problem.
th minute. City are benefiting from the absence of Mascherano (on way out?) and J Cole (suspension).
th minute. Tevez tried a cute ball looking for Johnson but can’t find him in the box.
th minute. If you thought Torres was invisible in the World Cup, you should see this match–so far.
th minute. Glen Johnson gets forward to cross but Richards again clears. Tevez lays it off nicely to Milner who finds Johnson. Johnson runs and shoots and it looked like Reina surely got a hand to it. But a goal kick is the decision.
th minute. More patient possession for City, Liverpool get it back momentarily but City have it again. Richards overlaps well there and takes the ball from Johnson, then finds Tevez. Tevez gets a corner after his effort is blocked.
st minute. Milner takes the corner from the right and Micah is there first, but his header curves away from goal.
nd minute. 63% possession for City! That sounds about right based on what we’ve seen, but it’s still an incredible figure if you remember how this fixture used to go. Y Toure is down for a couple of minutes after taking a knock from Skrtel. But he’s up and will be okay.
th minute. City benefit from poor touch by Kuyt and have the ball on the left. Liverpool get a move going that ends up with Gerrard striking a hoper from well out that goes far, far over.
th minute. Much better set up this time for Gerrard, Torres set him to shoot from just outside the D, but he didn’t get one of his better strikes on that one. Another goal kick.
th minute. Tevez tries a one touch ball but it doesn’t work. Liverpool starts play and Torres, livening up a bit, gets a throw down the right after a dribble. Fantastic play there by Milner picking up G Johnson’s late run into the box to get that danger away.
It’s halftime! City have a very convincing 1-0 lead, but the points are far from safe. Still, a big improvement from nine days ago against Spurs.
We’re back! Due to unforeseen events we are now about 15 minutes behind real time, so bear with us. What will the second half bring?
th minute. No changes on either side as City prepare to kick off. City had loads of possession in the first half but in truth did not create many clear chances. But they scored on the best move of the game, and hence have a lead to hold. N’Gog offside early on here.
th minute. City pick up where they left off, trying to work the right side through Adam Johnson. Richards now with a throw. . He had a chance to cross but unwisely passed it up and was tackled, then fouled trying to recover.
th minute. From a distance Milner bears a resemblance to a certain recently departed Welshman now plying his trade in Cardiff. Milner involved on that move down the left but it’s a goal kick.
th minute. Former City manager Peter Reid is on hand alongside Sir Alex. Reid was in charge the last time prior to 2010 City finished as high as 5th place (1992).
th minute. Liverpool have it now and work it back to front. Kompany easily reads Torres’s ball for N’Gog. Now Hart has to be alert to come off his line a couple of yards to collect that cross–under not much pressure, it has to be said. Hart has not had to make a meaningful save yet today.
nd minute. City work it in the box to Tevez, who finds Johnson. Johnson tries a shot that is deflected behind for a corner.
rd minute. On the corner, City score!! Milner took, Richards, got his noggin to it, and Tevez redirected it from a yard out, just in front of Reina. A slight touch it looked like, but I think that is his goal. No matter, City lead 2-0.
th minute. Liverpool come right back to try to get back in this, here’s a corner from Gerrard. Nothing comes from it but Liverpool have lifted the pace notably, playing with an air of desperation and urgency. City need to keep things tight here.
th minute. Kompany played a back heel on the endline to Milner, but it worked out. City attack down the left.
th minute. Toure’s ball for Johnson is collected by Reina. Here come L’pool–Torres runs at Richards and wins a foul 30 yards from goal. Micah doesn’t like that call from Phil Dowd.
th minute. Unbelievable sequence! Gerrard hit the bar, then Hart saved twice from close range from both N’Gog and Torres. That was as impressive as anything last week from Hart. City are lucky to hold this two goal lead.
th minute. Richards goes into the book for that foul on Torres. Kuyt called offside to stop a move.
th minute. City keep it for a spell and Lescott does not look out of place at left back tonight. But he’s called for a foul there after losing it in attack down the left.
st minute. Stats say it’s 74% possession this half for City, but it doesn’t feel like that right now after Liverpool’s surge of energy. Kuyt commits a foul in the center circle.
rd minute. Well done Kolo Toure, with a nice tackle and a dribble forward. City decide to put the brakes on and keep it for a bit.
th minute. City had a corner there, it’s cleared but City have a throw on the right.
th minute. That comes to nothing, goal kick to the visitors.
th minute. G Johnson’s dribble is cut out and City punt it forward.
th minute. Adam Johnson with a brilliant run into the box, and he’s won a penalty, it appears. Skrtel thinks Johnson dived, but I don’t think so. No yellow for Skrtel, already on a yellow. Tevez buries it! 3-0 to City!
th minute. Hard and low to the left corner from the captain–virtually unstoppable. Reina went the wrong way in any case. Johnson stumbled into the box and did well to stay up, then get taken down from Skrtel’s poorly timed lunged.
th minute. Sheikh Mansour should come around more often, it seems. After this performance, maybe he will.
th minute. Not to get greedy…but City need another goal to pass Manchester United in the early season standings.
st minute. De Jong with a nice tackle there and City have it again. Here comes that man Johnson. He is probably the best 7 million pounds City have spent in 2010.
nd minute. Really splendid footwork from Torres there to wriggle free from Richards there and get a shot in–but it flashes wide. Hart wouldn’t have saved that.
rd minute. Richards cuts out that ball and plays it back to Hart.
th minute. To their credit, Liverpool are still playing–no sign of heads going down a la Wigan at 3-0. A few more minutes I would think and then City might start bringing in a sub or two.
th minute. Johnson won yet another foul down the right side as the rain falls. Y Toure took it and it was deflected high and taken easily by Reina.
th minute. Ryan Babel is about to come on for Liverpool. Richards wins it again–nobody is worried about Jerome Boateng’s injury on Micah’s current form. City have another corner, this one on the left.
th minute. Johnson with the left footed out-swinger, Liverpool get it, great hustle by Milner on the other side and he’s grabbed by Jovanovic for an obvious foul. Milner will take this one.
th minute. Johnson shot off the layoff and Tevez blocked it! Unlucky. Reina with a punch of the next ball in and the danger is cleared.
th minute. Torres walks off in the rain as Babel comes on. And he almost immediately makes his presence felt with a fine dribble and shot–another good save by Hart. Corner kick. City clear it. G Johnson brings it forward and tries a hoper from distance, that’s well over.
th minute. Mario Balotelli has to be pretty impressed with this looking on in the stands. Maybe he will fit to go Thursday in the Europa League tie vs. Timisoara.
st minute. Tevez didn’t quite keep hold of that latest ball forward. Liverpool try to start again from the back. But Milner wins it back from Kuyt in short order.
nd minute. Pouring rain now, but the City supporters aren’t leaving this. I might have to do some research on the last time City defeated Liverpool by three goals, if that’s how it finishes. The starting eleven for City show no signs of losing concentration.
rd minute. Tevez tries to get on Skrtel’s shoulder and run behind for his hat trick, but Y Toure’s pass is too strong and Reina collects. City come again through Milner and Tevez. Milner has fit in as well as you could possibly expect on a debut.
th minute. A Jjohnson to Toure to Tevez, who tried to cutely lay it off for Lescott–but it’s cut out. Agger takes down A. Johnson heavily.
th minute. City are not bringing on any big stars to close this out, but Jo and Zabaleta are coming on. YaYa Toure takes some well-earned applause, and also Carlos Tevez–both are coming off. Maybe Jo can poach one here and continue his preseason form.
th minute. Pacheco is on for Jovanovic for Liverpool.
th minute. Kompany slipped in the rain for a moment there but did well to recover quickly and keep Babel from getting in behind. I’ve just noticed he’s wearing a new number this season, #4. He’s been solid as ever tonight.
th minute. One can’t imagine there will be much stoppage time tonight–this one now has the feel of being over. Jo’s first touch isn’t too good trying to collect Barry’s pass. Kuyt heads a cross harmlessly into Hart’s arms from 15 yards or so.
th minute. 47,000 plus tonight–not quite full, but close. Hopefully at least half that will turn out for the next home game in three days’ time. Gerrard still battling, gets a cross in but no one is there.
th minute. Carragher knocks that long ball for Jo out. “Blue Moon” rings out around the ground. Oddly, I don’t think I’ve heard the exhortative cheer “Come on City!” tonight. No need, really. Two minutes stoppage time announced.
st minute. Would be nice for City to close this out with another clean sheet. Liverpool try another ball in through Kuyt and will get a corner as we enter the final minute.
nd minute. Corner is cleared by a City head. Zabaleta wins his battle with Pacheco and it’s a throw-in for City. Almost there.
There it is–full time! A pretty thorough, comprehensive win for Manchester City over Liverpool. City’s ownership will be pleased that the summer investment seems to be paying off already.
City were solid everywhere in the park, and got some great play in goal from Joe Hart when called upon. This was a vast improvement on the Spurs match. Perhaps the challenge now is not to get carried away. But that looked like a team capable of winning any competition the club happen to be entered in.
ESPN have supplied the information that City’s last three goal victory over Liverpool was in 1937. A good omen that–City won the league (First Division) in 1937.
Man of the Match: Adam Johnson.
Next match: Timisoara in the 2nd leg, Thursday, with City holding a 1-0 lead.

congrats guys!! I think u have a terrific team. Could go for the title if u keep it solid and win like this. I know is just the start of the season, but a good start is half the job done.
People would say bad things about City now, but I really think u deserve success. Some clubs like Newcastle, Totenham, Villa, including City, deserve to be successful. Enough of old farts SAF, Wenger etc.
Im for a New World Order, NOW.
I like revolutions they are exCITYng .

I hope yesterday’s result was a sign of City’s quality, and not Liverpool’s mediocrity.
