Notts County have had some exciting times recently with an investment of funds and Sven Goran Erikson their manager for a while, and Sol Campbell signed up albeit only for one game as it turned out. But even after Sven and Sol moved on it didn’t stop them winning League 2 with ten points to spare last season, and they have made a decent start in League 1, finding themselves halfway after 7 games. 9 of their ten points so far have come from 3 home wins and they haven’t fared as well on the road. There have been 23 goals in their 7 league games so far so they clearly play an open game with 11 for and 12 against. They have put Plymouth and Watford out of the Carling Cup at Meadow Lane in the first two rounds and attract crowds around the 6,000 mark for their home games.
No question that most of the attention of Wolves fans will be directed towards the County number 9. Lee Hughes was an Albion hero for many years and scored more than a goal every two games for the baggies. He moved onto Coventry where he wasn’t so successful before returning to the Hawthorns for an unsuccessful spell where he failed to score a single goal in one what was one of their many relegation seasons in 2002/03. During the 2003/04 season he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving anf played out the remainder of that season while on bail. He was found guilty of the offence and with leaving the scene of an accident and was sentenced to 6 years in prison which he served firstly in Rutland and then ironically in Featherstone prison in Wolverhampton. Since being released he has rebuilt his football career firstly with Oldham where he averaged a goal every two games and then with Notts County where has scored 36 times in 49 games. Wolves fans will doubtless be keen to remind him of his past with a ‘warm’ reception.
Wolves will probably give further Carling Cup opportunities to Hennessey, Elokobi, Guedioura, Halford and Milijas. If fit there may be places for Zubar and Mujangi Bia and maybe also for Ebanks Blake and Berra who missed the weekend game at Spurs. Youngsters like Danny Baath, Scott Malone, Jonny Gorman and Sam Winnall will also be hoping for a game. But the most interesting aspect of the game should be an overdue Wolves debut for summer signing Mouyokolo. The youngster brought in from Hull has a big reputation and Wolves fans will be keen to see how close he looks to being ready for a chance in the Premier League team.
Looking back at the weekend I suppose how you reflect on the Spurs game will depend on whether you are a glass hafl full or half empty person. One view would be that Spurs had plenty of chances to score and missed them or were thwarted by Hahnemann, then Wolves gifted the home side a way back with a blatant penalty then fell apart in the last few minutes. Another view would be that Wolves absorbed what Spurs could throw at them as they did last season, got ahead in the game, made the mistake of allowing Hutton to run 50 yards and then brought him down in the area, and then Spurs got two very lucky goals to win the game. Both those assessments could be deemed realistic and it certainly was not the case that Wolves fell apart after the equaliser because for most of the next ten minutes Spurs were pinned back in their area. But what is unquestionably the case, as if we didn’t know it already, is that when you make mistakes against the better teams in this division they punish you, and Wolves need to stamp out individual errors to get rewards from games like this.
A worry for the weekend is the injury that Jarvis suffered at Spurs and we hope that a week of treatment will be enough to get him ready for the weekend. Meanwhile it seems half the teams in the Championship are queueing to take Michael Kightly on loan when he is fit. He will be boosted by knowing he is a wanted man and lets hope he can get in a couple of months of playing before getting back in the Wolves squad in January.
On the horizon now for Wolves is a run of four games that represent their most difficult spell of the season with trips to Chelsea and Man Utd and home games against Man City and Arsenal. It is vital therefore that Wolves get some points in the bag in the three games preceeding that run against Villa at home, Wigan away, then West Ham at home. At least 4 points and preferably 6 must be the target from these games to keep on schedule to at least equal last season’s finishing position.
